  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk (or milk + 1 tablespoon vinegar)
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup hot coffee (or hot water)

For the Whipped Cream Filling:

  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream (cold)
  • ½ cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Strawberry Filling:

  • 2 cups fresh strawberries, sliced
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

For the Decoration:

  • Chocolate shavings or curls
  • Whole strawberries

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Chocolate Cake

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 8-inch round cake pans with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add buttermilk, oil, eggs, and vanilla. Beat until well combined.
  4. Gradually pour in the hot coffee, mixing until smooth. The batter will be thin—this is normal!
  5. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 2: Prepare the Strawberry Filling

  1. In a bowl, toss the sliced strawberries with sugar and lemon juice. Let them sit for about 15 minutes to release their juices.

Step 3: Prepare the Whipped Cream

  1. In a chilled mixing bowl, beat the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form. Keep refrigerated until ready to use.

Step 4: Assemble the Cake

  1. Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Brush lightly with some of the strawberry juice for extra flavor.
  2. Spread a generous layer of whipped cream over the cake.
  3. Add a layer of sliced strawberries on top of the whipped cream.
  4. Place the second cake layer on top and repeat with more whipped cream.
  5. Frost the entire cake with the remaining whipped cream, smoothing it with a spatula.

Step 5: Decorate the Cake

  1. Garnish the cake with chocolate shavings and whole strawberries for an elegant finish.
  2. Chill the cake for at least 1 hour before serving to let the flavors meld together.

💡 Baking Tips for the Perfect Black Forest Cake

Use High-Quality Cocoa Powder – For a rich, deep chocolate flavor, use a good-quality unsweetened cocoa powder. Dutch-processed cocoa gives an even smoother taste.

Don’t Overmix the Batter – Mix the ingredients until just combined to keep the cake light and fluffy. Overmixing can make it dense.

Use Room Temperature Ingredients – Bring eggs, buttermilk, and oil to room temperature before baking for an even-textured cake.

Cool Cakes Completely Before Assembling – Warm cakes can cause the whipped cream to melt. For best results, chill the cake layers in the fridge before assembling.

Chill Your Whipping Cream & Bowl – For stable whipped cream, use very cold heavy cream and chill your mixing bowl and beaters before whipping.

Brush Cake Layers with Syrup – For extra moisture and flavor, brush each layer with cherry or strawberry syrup before adding the filling.
