Ingredients
For the Chocolate Cake:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 cup buttermilk (or milk + 1 tablespoon vinegar)
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- 2 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup hot coffee (or hot water)
For the Whipped Cream Filling:
- 2 cups heavy whipping cream (cold)
- ½ cup powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the Strawberry Filling:
- 2 cups fresh strawberries, sliced
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
For the Decoration:
- Chocolate shavings or curls
- Whole strawberries
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Chocolate Cake
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 8-inch round cake pans with parchment paper.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Add buttermilk, oil, eggs, and vanilla. Beat until well combined.
- Gradually pour in the hot coffee, mixing until smooth. The batter will be thin—this is normal!
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
Step 2: Prepare the Strawberry Filling
- In a bowl, toss the sliced strawberries with sugar and lemon juice. Let them sit for about 15 minutes to release their juices.
Step 3: Prepare the Whipped Cream
- In a chilled mixing bowl, beat the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form. Keep refrigerated until ready to use.
Step 4: Assemble the Cake
- Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Brush lightly with some of the strawberry juice for extra flavor.
- Spread a generous layer of whipped cream over the cake.
- Add a layer of sliced strawberries on top of the whipped cream.
- Place the second cake layer on top and repeat with more whipped cream.
- Frost the entire cake with the remaining whipped cream, smoothing it with a spatula.
Step 5: Decorate the Cake
- Garnish the cake with chocolate shavings and whole strawberries for an elegant finish.
- Chill the cake for at least 1 hour before serving to let the flavors meld together.
Enjoy Your Homemade Black Forest Cake!
This Chocolate Black Forest Cake with Strawberries and Whipped Cream is a showstopper dessert that’s perfect for any occasion. The combination of rich chocolate cake, fresh fruit, and light whipped cream makes every bite irresistibly delicious!
💡 Baking Tips for the Perfect Black Forest Cake
✔ Use High-Quality Cocoa Powder – For a rich, deep chocolate flavor, use a good-quality unsweetened cocoa powder. Dutch-processed cocoa gives an even smoother taste.
✔ Don’t Overmix the Batter – Mix the ingredients until just combined to keep the cake light and fluffy. Overmixing can make it dense.
✔ Use Room Temperature Ingredients – Bring eggs, buttermilk, and oil to room temperature before baking for an even-textured cake.
✔ Cool Cakes Completely Before Assembling – Warm cakes can cause the whipped cream to melt. For best results, chill the cake layers in the fridge before assembling.
✔ Chill Your Whipping Cream & Bowl – For stable whipped cream, use very cold heavy cream and chill your mixing bowl and beaters before whipping.
✔ Brush Cake Layers with Syrup – For extra moisture and flavor, brush each layer with cherry or strawberry syrup before adding the filling.
